In 2020, the number of Italians who moved abroad decreased. The coronavirus pandemic has had an impact of the country's migration rate as well as significant restrictions on movement have been introduced. In particular, during the first wave of infections registered between March and May 2020, the number of Italian emigrants dropped by 37.3 percent compared to the same period of 2019. However, before the pandemic and in the transition phase in summer 2020, the number of people who moved abroad increased.
