*'Craft beer' refers to beverages produced and distributed by microbreweries. Microbreweries in this case indicate manufacturers of beer and low-malt beer/sparkling liquor (happoshu). Including corporations with a capital of less than 300 million Japanese yen as well as corporations and individuals with less than 300 employees.
Excluding the five major breweries Asahi Breweries, Suntory Beer, Sapporo Breweries, Kirin Brewery, and Orion Breweries.

In fiscal year 2018, the production volume of low-malt beer-style (happoshu) craft beer manufactured by microbreweries in Japan amounted to around kiloliters, representing a decrease from over four thousand kiloliters in the previous year.
Happoshu refers to beer-like beverages with a malt content of less than ** percent. Furthermore, beverages with a malt content over ** percent, but not classified as 'beer' due to optional ingredients like fruits or herbs, are also classified as happoshu.
