The preliminary gross value of oranges in South Africa in the marketing year 2020/2021 amounted to almost ** billion South African rands (this is comparable to roughly *** million U.S. dollars), which represented an increase of **** percent from the preceding year. Moreover, between 2000 and 2021, the gross value for oranges followed a positive trend, ranging between million South African rands ( million U.S dollars) and the said value in 2020/2021.

Furthermore, until 2009/2010, the gross value increased but had a few drops in 2002/2003, 2004/2005, 2005/2006, and 2009/2010 with reductions of close to ***, ***, ****, and **** percent respectively from the previous years. Also, starting 2009/2010 and until 2018/2019, the gross value increased steadily with an overall growth of percent. It is worth noting that this increase can be linked to an increase in exports along with the rand being relatively weaker compared to currencies of trading partners. Gross value is affected by several variables like production, exports, prices on international markets and exchange rates, among others. The covid pandemic also had an effect on the gross value of South African oranges as it dropped for the first time since 2009/2010 in 2019/2020.
