Weibo, China's most popular microblogging site, amassed more than *** million monthly active app users in May 2025. After X (formerly known as Twitter) was banned in the country, the Chinese internet company Sina launched Weibo in 2009. Other domestic tech giants — Tencent, NetEase, and Sohu — developed their blogging platforms later. However, none of them could compete against the well-established Weibo and were shut down one after another.
