As of 2019, South Africa produced *** thousand metric tons of barley, down from *** thousand metric tons in the year before. An overall increasing trend on the production of barley, with several drops, was registered since 2000. In 2010, the production amounted to *** thousand metric tons, which was followed by a significant increase in 2011 of approximately ** percent. This can be linked to better yields along with a growth on production in Western Cape, which is considered the major barley producing state. Moreover, the slight decline in 2013 can be attributed to a fall in the number of hectares of planted barley.
