With the introduction of the HS 2022 system, a new category (HS 2404) was created to explicitly include e-cigarettes and other nicotine-containing products, which were previously inconsistently reported or classified outside the tobacco segment. As China is the global manufacturing hub for vaping products, the inclusion of these high-value exports significantly inflated the reported totals. As a result, the post-2022 figures are not directly comparable with earlier years and largely reflect the addition of the fast-growing e-cigarette segment rather than organic growth in conventional tobacco exports.
In 2024, China exported approximately **** billion U.S. dollars worth of tobacco and tobacco substitute products, representing considerable growth compared to the year prior. That year, the import value of tobacco products to China amounted to about **** billion U.S. dollars.
