In addition to acting as essential carbon sinks for Earth, forests provide society with many important materials, broadly referred to as forest products. Although forest products are typically focused on wood-based goods such as lumber, pulp, and paper, non-timber forest products are also economically significant. Non-timber forest products encompass bamboo, natural rubber, wild mushrooms, maple syrup, forest nuts, and others. In 2023, raw, unprocessed timber, known as roundwood, reached a global production volume of nearly 3.89 billion cubic meters, a slight decrease from the previous year.
