"In separate questions, respondents were asked if a doctor or other health professional had ever told them that they had high cholesterol. Respondents who answered affirmatively were asked, in separate questions, whether they had been told by a doctor or other health professional that they had high cholesterol in the past 12 months, and whether they were taking prescribed medicine to help lower their cholesterol. Respondents had to have been taking those medications or had high cholesterol during the past 12 months to be classified as having high cholesterol."
