During the complete lockdown due to coronavirus (COVID-19) outbreak, Italian consumers appeared quite worried of running out of food and other consumer goods. Between February and March 2020, Italy experienced a significant growth in retail sales value, if compared with the average values of the previous year. In fact, the food retail sector reported an increase of 16.4 percent in the week between March 9th and 15th.
Consumers in the Southern regions appeared the most eager to make provisions. During the mentioned week, the retail sales value in the South grew by 28.4 percent.
