Since 2021, no electric variants of the Hyundai Ioniq was sold in South Korea, due to it being discontinued in the year prior. Instead, Hyundai is releasing the new Ioniq * and Ioniq * models as part of its new Ioniq brand of electric vehicles. Contrary to its successful exports, the Ioniq has proven rather unpopular in the Korean market. The hybrid variant of the Ioniq was first launched in South Korea in January 2016, simultaneously with exports. The electric variant started domestic sales in June that year, while exports of that began in February. The plug-in hybrid variant of the Ioniq was only released in March 2017, several months after it was first exported in November 2016.
