In 2023, roughly ** percent of the people who have been officially euthanized in Belgium suffered from cancer. Just over ** percent of euthanasia demands were made by people suffering from multiple pathologies. Furthermore, *** percent suffered from psychiatric disorders and another *** percent had cognitive disorders such as dementia. Since 2002, a condition for legal active euthanasia in Belgium is that the illness of a demander must be terminal and that they must be in great physical or mental suffering, with no available treatment to alleviate their distress.
