A unicorn company is a privately owned startup that has a current valuation of one billion U.S. dollars or over. Once a company has gone public (IPO) or has been acquired it is no longer termed as a unicorn.

The global landscape of unicorn companies, privately held startups valued at * U.S. dollars or more, has shifted significantly in recent years. North America has consistently led in producing new unicorns, reaching a peak of *** in 2021. However, the Asia-Pacific region has also emerged as a major hub, driven in part by the rise of Chinese technology companies. In 2025, a total of *** new unicorns were created worldwide, with more than half founded in North America.
