Between 1992 and June 30, 2020, almost 10.8 thousand measures of pre-trial detentions were ordered by the judicial authority for mafia-related crimes in Italy. The largest number of orders concerned individuals who belonged to the clans of Camorra, the Campanian mafia.
In 1991, an investigation body was founded in Italy with the aim to enhance the fight against mafia, the Anti-Mafia Investigation Directorate (Direzione Investigativa Antimafia or DIA).
