According to a survey conducted in November 2019 among locals of the 47 prefectures in Japan, residents in Iwate prefecture were the most generous at New Year's sales, with expenses reaching around Japanese yen on average.
New Year's sales in Japan are particularly popular for the retail of so called fukubukuro. Those lucky bags are exclusively available during the first days of the new year. Fukubukuro are filled with unknown commodities and are sold for a substantial discount well below the list price of the items contained within the bags.
