Between 2012 and 2021, the highest number of patent applications in the Nordic countries were filed in Sweden, with the exception of 2018. In 2021, 477 patent applications were filed in Sweden per million inhabitants. Since 2017, the second highest number of applications were filed in Denmark, followed by Finland. The number of patent applications in Iceland and Norway per million inhabitants were significantly lower than in the other three countries throughout the whole period.
