According to a survey on governance among Indonesians, as of August 2019, most of the respondents from various age groups were satisfied with the performance of the Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) in fighting against corruption in Indonesia. The KPK was also the state institution with the highest level of trust among Indonesians.

However, on 17 September 2019, the People's Representative Council (DPR) passed a bill revising Law No.30/2002, which pertains to a weakening of the KPK's authority to investigate corruption cases. A series of mass demonstrations led by students occurred in major cities of Indonesia on 23 September 2019 to object against this proposed revision, as well as several bills. The protests have since developed into the largest student movement in Indonesia since the 1998 demonstrations that brought down the Suharto regime.
