Despite a huge fall in the number of insurtech startups launching globally in 2019, the value of funding has not decreased. 2019 saw the second highest value in insurtech startup investments in the last decade with a value of over *** billion U.S dollars - almost double the previous record of *** billion U.S. dollars set in 2017. Traditionally, investors in insurtech companies focus on personal, commercial, customer acquisition and operations companies.

Biggest insurtech markets

The United States is without a doubt the biggest player in the insurtech market, but Europe doesn’t fall far behind. The United Kingdom (UK), which is the largest insurance market in Europe made up nine percent of insurtech funding transactions since 2012.

Leading investors

In the beginning, many startups don’t make revenue. Seed investment, which is the very early stage of a startup investment, can help businesses get up and running. As of October 2019, the London-based financial services investor Anthemis was responsible for seed investment in the highest number of insurtech companies across Europe. Between 2013 and October 2019, the venture capital firm Finch Capital with headquarters in the Netherlands has invested in four insurtech companies through series A and B funding.
