The majority of respondents taking part in this 2018 survey stated that their groceries in December are different from what they shop during the rest of the year. Over ** percent of all survey respondents shopped more extensively in December, during which the Dutch do not only celebrate Christmas, but also Sinterklaas or Saint Nicholas. On the name day of Saint Nicholas (December ***) traditionally the young Dutch are surprised with gifts and confectionery. However, it is by no means just a children's feast. Older Dutch can also join in and often celebrate by making surprise gifts and by writing poems or by playing games.
