In December 2023, retail sales of legal cannabis stores across Canada reached over *** million Canadian dollars. Since the federal legalization of cannabis for both medicinal and recreational use in Canada on October 17, 2018, store sales of the drug have increased fairly steadily and peaked in August 2023. 

Cannabis stores in Canada

Accounting for over outlets, the province of Ontario had by far the highest number of cannabis stores in all of Canada as of December 2023. Alberta stood in second place with *** stores that year. 

Facilities and factories in Canada

Along with many retail stores, many of Canada’s cannabis-growing businesses were located in Ontario: the east-central region was home to *** cannabis businesses in 2023. Ontario also had the highest number of cannabis product manufacturing enterprises that same year.
