According to the Indian government, about ** security force personnel were killed due to left-wing extremist incidents across the country in 2018. In order to combat this form of insurgency, the government created a special left wing extremism division in 2006.
Left-wing extremism comes in various forms, but largely refers to the Naxal-Maoist insurgencies in the eastern, central and southern parts. This belt was commonly known as the Red Corridor due to its communist ideologies. As of 2011, about ** districts across ten states were known to be affected by this kind of extremism.
