Semi-structured interviews were used, with 210 experts and current and former policymakers in 15 territories including the US, the UK, France, Germany, Russia, China, Israel, Iran, Palestine, Syria, Lebanon, Yemen, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates.

According to a survey on the steps to enable a security framework in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region in 2020, 100 percent of the respondents from the United Arab Emirates (UAE) thought that the factional political system of Iran influence its regional strategy. In comparison only ** percent of respondents from Syria agreed with this.
