How do the Dutch perform their P2P payments? In 2020, money transfers like splitting a bill between friends or paying a monthly rent mostly happened with cash money. This was different, however, for young adults between 19 and 24 years old. ** percent of all their P2P transactions were done via online banking, mobile apps or other electronic means. The source adds that electronic payments saw an increase across all age groups, as more people owned a smartphone. A popular money transfer app in the Netherlands is Tikkie from Dutch bank ABN AMRO, which had around five million users in 2019. The aim of the service is that consumers send a payment request via a text message in WhatsApp, which will then be processed by iDEAL (an inter-bank system local to the Netherlands). The app can be used by anybody in the Netherlands, not only clients from ABN AMRO.
