The survey question was phrased as follows: Why do you work?
The survey was conducted using an online interview administered to members of a panel comprising of over 30,000 individuals across 100 Indian cities. The survey classified women as 'married', 'single' or 'other', in which the 'other' category refers to unmarried women who may be in a relationship, or would rather not say.

About ** percent of married women that were surveyed said that the need for money to meet family responsibilities made them take up employment. Among the single women, ** percent of the respondents said that financial independence was the main reason to take up employment. These were responses to a survey conducted between September 2018 and October 2018 about the factors that motivate women in India to take up employment, based on their marital status.
