Digital payments in Thailand - statistics & facts
Purchasing via and accepting QR code payments has become the norm for street vendor purchases and department store visits in Thailand. The concept of digital payments started with conventional ATM bank transfers and card payments through EDC machines. The country’s digital payment breakthrough occurred when the Bank of Thailand (BOT) introduced its national e-payment system, PromptPay. Both government and private agencies have continuously supported digital payments by upgrading payment infrastructure, reducing fees for interbank transfers, and stimulating the economy through the government digital wallet. This, combined with the COVID-19 outbreak and greater access to technology, has caused Thailand’s internet banking transaction volume to snowball over the past few years.
