Compared to regular plastics made with non-renewable feedstocks, bio-based and biodegradable plastics are typically more sustainable. Increasing concerns over the use of petroleum and natural gas as the feedstocks of plastics, as well as the environmental issues associated with conventional plastic waste, have led to a push for more sustainable alternatives. Bioplastics are plastics that are biobased, biodegradable, or both. They are produced using renewable biomass sources such as corn starch, vegetable oils, sawdust, straw, and others.
