Packaging is one of the main applications of plastic materials globally, accounting for roughly 35 percent of total global plastic consumption. Indeed, plastics have become essential to the global packaging industry thanks to their versatility, durability, low cost, and lightweight properties. In 2025, the global plastic packaging market was valued at over 432 billion U.S. dollars, underscoring the strong economic impact of this market.
How plastic conquered the packaging aisle
The increased global demand for plastic in recent decades has seen it become one of the main materials used within the packaging industry, replacing more traditional options like paper, metal, and glass across many products. Global plastics production surpassed 430 million metric tons in 2024, feeding steady demand from sectors including pharmaceutical and medical packaging, which alone was worth over 62 billion U.S. dollars in 2025. Plastic packaging is produced from various polymer types, with each having characteristics for specific applications. For example, high-density polyethylene (HDPE) is commonly used to make containers for cleaning supplies due to its chemical resistance, while polyethylene terephthalate (PET) is primarily used for beverage bottles. Polypropylene packaging films represent another fast-growing segment. The industry's biggest players are U.S.-headquartered: Amcor leads with annual revenue exceeding 15 billion U.S. dollars, followed closely by Berry Global.
Sustainability pressures reshaping the market
Although many types of plastic are technically recyclable, only a small amount gets recycled globally due to various different barriers. As a result, there has been increased consumer skepticism of many plastic products due to the environmental impact plastic waste has on the planet, with packaging facing considerable scrutiny. Growing plastic pollution has become an urgent environmental crisis, with governments worldwide introducing bans and taxes on products to reduce waste. The global sustainable plastic packaging market was valued at roughly 124 billion U.S. dollars in 2025 and is forecast to surpass 327 billion U.S. dollars by 2035. Bioplastic production capacity for packaging is also expanding, and many consumer brands are targeting a reduction in virgin plastic use while increasing the share of post-consumer recycled content. With sustainable alternatives growing at more than double the rate of the overall plastic packaging market, the industry's long-term trajectory will likely depend on how quickly circular economy solutions can scale.
