Japan seems to be entering a new era. The country鈥檚 remarkable economic rise between the 1960s and 1980s was followed by three decades of stagnating economic growth and deflation, the so-called lost decades. Rapid economic growth made Japan the second-largest economy in the world in 1968 before the collapse of an asset price bubble in 1991 caused a lengthy period of recession. Economic stimulus and unprecedented monetary policy were introduced to counter the struggle with stagnation. Just recently, a rise in inflation suggests a turning point may have been reached.
Japan achieved rapid economic growth as a major exporter of manufactured goods in the post-war period. Although it is still renowned as a major producer of electric appliances and automobiles, its economy has become more service-oriented since the 1980s. The service sector makes up just over 70 percent of the GDP across economic sectors, followed by the manufacturing sector at around 27 percent.
Japan was the world鈥檚 seventh-largest importer and fifth-largest exporter in 2023. Due to the scarcity of arable land and natural resources, it is highly dependent on the import of fuels, raw materials, and food. Trade in goods and services reached over 46 percent of the GDP.
In 2013, a set of policies dubbed Abenomics, consisting of structural reform and fiscal and monetary expansion, was introduced to end deflation and drive growth. However, Japan鈥檚 economy has only recently shown signs of a possible shift. Since 2022, inflation has reached levels unseen since the burst of the speculative bubble, above the central bank's inflation target of two percent.
Whether this trend will continue depends on the development of wages, among other factors. As the rise in prices means a decrease in consumers鈥 purchasing power, wages must rise sufficiently to support consumption spending and achieve sustained economic growth.
