Hotel industry recovery post COVID-19 in New Zealand - statistics & facts
The lifeblood of New Zealand’s hotel industry is both domestic and international tourism, and inevitably hotels in the country suffered adverse effects as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Border closures, as well as lockdowns, meant that leisure travel was no longer possible, affecting the hospitality industry worldwide as a whole. In the United States, occupancy dropped around 20 percent from 2019 to 2020, and revenue per room almost halved. It was a similar story in the United Kingdom, with occupancy more than halving in 2020, as well as expenditure on domestic tourism.
