Salmon trade
Norway was the
biggest player in the salmon industry, followed by Sweden, Denmark, and Chile. Norway held about half of the fresh or chilled salmon exports worldwide. The country was also by far the
biggest supplier of salmonids for the U.S., with over 6.5 million U.S. dollars’ worth of salmon imported into the U.S. in 2024.
Sweden was the second biggest supplier of salmon worldwide. Whole salmon or salmon in pieces exports from Sweden doubled in value in the last ten years. Poland and U.S. were the
top importers of salmon with over 1.8 and 1.4 billion U.S. dollars in import value, respectively.
Atlantic salmon market
The worldwide
sales value of Atlantic salmon more than tripled between the years of 2012 and 2023. The market was valued at over 20 billion euros in 2023. From 2016 on, the
market price of salmon decreased every year, starting at around 6.72 euros per kilogram and ending at five euros per kilogram in 2020, before jumping back up again in 2022 and 2023. As of 2023, the annual price of salmon was about seven U.S. dollars per kilogram worldwide. On average, consumers in the United States were
spending about 12 U.S. dollars on salmon per trip to the grocery store, while spending on fresh seafood was a bit lower, at just below ten U.S. dollars per trip to the store. Despite the price fluctuations, the consumption of salmon has increased. Considered a healthy protein source in many countries, salmon
consumption in the EU and the UK increased by 5.6 percent in 2024. That year, the global consumption volume of Atlantic salmon grew by three percent in comparison to the previous year showing an increasing demand in the market.
