Gas stations in the U.S. - statistics & facts
The United States is a country that runs predominantly on cars, and as such, there is a robust industry of gas stations selling fuel for motor vehicles. Gas station sales have peaked in 2022, reaching over 730 billion U.S. dollars, and by 2024, that number decreased to 631.5 billion U.S. dollars. During this past decade, gasoline and diesel fuel were the most common fuels sold and there is a seasonal component to both gasoline sales and pricing, reflecting a probable rise in driving during good weather and the months where most people take their summer holidays.
Many other, privately owned gas stations and convenience stores generated a revenue around or above 20 billion U.S. dollars, such as Love’s Travel Stops & Country Stores, as well as QuikTrip and Wawa.

Both brands generate most of their revenue from fuel sales, with °ä²¹²õ±ð²â’s recording just under 9.8 billion U.S. dollars, which made up over 60 percent of its revenue in 2025. Alternative fuel as an option
The popularity of alternative fuel has been on the rise, along with the ownership of electric cars in the last few years. In 2023, the number of electric charging stations reached over 64 thousand in the United States, with approximately 168 thousand public chargers, a sharp rise since the 2010s, when there were only about 400 charging points. Besides electric charging stations and fully electric vehicles, fuel ethanol, propane, and biodiesel were among the popular alternative fuel options at American gas stations.
