Taxation in the UK - Statistics & Facts
In the 2024/25 financial year the value of tax receipts collected by Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in the United Kingdom amounted to almost 840 billion British pounds. Tax is by far the main revenue source for the UK government, with income tax, value added tax (VAT) and National Insurance contributions being the three-largest taxation sources in terms of value. In recent years, the overall value of tax revenue collected has consistently fallen short of what is expected, resulting in a tax gap of just under 40 billion pounds in 2022/23.
