No country produces, or consumes, more insurance than the United States. US insurance premiums written totaled 1.76 trillion U.S. dollars in 2024, and the country accounted for 59.1 percent of the entire global OECD insurance market in that year, more than the next nine largest markets combined, including Japan, the United Kingdom, and China. That dominance has held without interruption since 2000, reflecting both the scale of the domestic economy and the breadth of coverage demand across property, liability, health, and life lines. That dominance is now being reshaped by catastrophe鈥慸riven volatility, surging health premiums, and rapid AI adoption across the value chain.
The property and casualty segment has become the larger of the two main non-health pillars, with property and casualty premiums reaching 932.5 billion U.S. dollars in 2024 against 822.6 billion U.S. dollars for life and annuity. Within the property and casualty segment, private passenger auto alone accounted for 37.1 percent of net premiums written in in the same year, with homeowners multiple peril insurance adding a further 15.6 percent. Together, these two personal lines account for more than half the segment, leaving commercial and specialty lines to compete for the remainder. Meanwhile, rate hardening in commercial property and liability has supported premium growth, but rising loss costs and reinsurance expenses have kept underwriting margins under pressure.
Climate- and exposure-driven losses are increasingly straining the property and casualty segment. Insured catastrophe losses in the United States reached 112.8 billion U.S. dollars in 2024, the second-highest figure on record since 1999, surpassed only by 2017's hurricane-driven peak of 131 billion U.S. dollars. Elevated loss years are no longer isolated events: all five of the most costly catastrophe years on record occurred between 2017 and 2024, putting sustained pressure on underwriting margins and pushing some carriers to exit high-risk markets altogether. For policyholders, this translates into higher premiums, more restrictive terms, and, in some states, dwindling availability of homeowners鈥 coverage from traditional carriers.
The health segment may be the most consequential growth story. Direct health insurance premiums written almost tripled from 459.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2013 to approximately 1.2 trillion U.S. dollars in 2023. That growth has further entrenched a handful of large carriers: the聽US health insurance market was led by UnitedHealth Group with a 16 percent enrollment share in 2024, followed by Elevance Health and CVS (Aetna) at 12 percent each, a structure that has remained largely stable since 2014 despite the sector's expansion. That concentration is drawing continued scrutiny from regulators and employer groups concerned about pricing power and network breadth. Generally speaking, premium expansion reflects a combination of medical cost inflation, coverage expansions under public programs, and growth in Medicare Advantage and managed Medicaid enrollment.
Beyond premium volumes and loss dynamics, technology and corporate strategy are reshaping how risk is priced and distributed. Artificial intelligence (AI) is attracting capital at pace across the insurance sector.聽AI-native insurtech companies raised a total of 542 million U.S. dollars in the third quarter of 2025 alone, with the largest single round 鈥 290 million U.S. dollars 鈥 secured by pricing and underwriting platform Earnix. More precise risk modeling may allow carriers to maintain capacity in volatile regions by reallocating it more selectively, rather than withdrawing from entire states or lines. At the same time, regulators鈥 growing focus on model transparency and algorithmic bias is forcing carriers to invest in governance alongside experimentation.聽
Insurance accounted for 13.3 percent of total financial services M&A deal value in the United States in 2025 while representing 18.7 percent of deal volume, a gap that points to a higher number of transactions but relatively smaller deal sizes compared to banking and capital markets. The largest insurance transaction among the top U.S. financial services deals of 2025 was Brown and Brown's acquisition of RSC Topco for 9.8 billion U.S. dollars, reflecting ongoing broker consolidation as distribution costs rise and carriers seek scale advantages across underwriting and claims. Taken together, these trends point to a US insurance market that is simultaneously dominant, structurally stressed, and increasingly data鈥慸riven. Continued catastrophe volatility, health鈥慶are inflation, and AI deployment are likely to determine which carriers can convert scale into sustainable profitability over the next decade.
