From humble beginnings as a single FM radio station to one of Canada’s largest telecommunication companies, Rogers Communications has come a long way since then. Emerging as the
largest telecom provider in Canada by mobile subscriber count, the company had
26 thousand employees in 2023. Rogers’s offerings include
wireless mobile services, cable TV, and media entertainment. The company’s main competitors in the Canadian telecoms landscape include Bell Canada, Telus, and Videotron.
Rogers’s revenue grows following the Shaw acquisition
Rogers’s revenue has been steadily increasing since 2020, with the company’s revenue
reaching a record 19.3 billion Canadian dollars in 2023. In contrast, its annual net income fluctuated in the same period,
reaching 850 million Canadian dollars, the second-lowest annual net income for Rogers since 2010. Rogers generates most of its revenue from the wireless segment, with
more than 11.6 billion Canadian dollars in 2023, accounting for over half of Rogers’s revenue in that year. The company’s cable segment was the second-highest revenue for Rogers,
reaching seven billion Canadian dollars in 2023, an increase of around 70 percentage points compared to the previous year. This significant increase in segment revenue owes to Roger’s recent acquisition of Canadian cable company Shaw Communications, completed in early 2023.
Wireless segment at the forefront
Wireless remains the most significant segment for Rogers, as wireless consumer services accounted for
over 76 percent of the segment’s revenue in 2023, with the remaining share going to wireless equipment revenues. Rogers Communications had
more than 11.6 million wireless subscribers in 2023. Post-paid customers generally
account for most of Rogers’s subscriber base. The company’s churn rate for postpaid customers fluctuates consistently between 0.7 and 1.5 percent, with the churn rate reaching a
record 1.7 percent at the end of 2023.
