England is by far the largest constituent country of the United Kingdom, with a population of 57.7 million of the UK’s overall population of 67.3 million in 2023. London, the UK and England’s capital city, is the most populous settlement and had a population of around 8.9 million in 2023, significantly more than England’s next largest cities, Birmingham and Manchester. England’s nine regions are the country’s highest level of administrative sub-division, the most heavily populated being South East England, at approximately 9.5 million people. The 48 ceremonial counties of England, provide a more historic way of dividing the country, but regional power generally lies in the hands of 317 smaller local authorities.
