Higher education in Portugal - statistics & facts
With only less than a third of its population having the tertiary education level in 2024, Portugal lagged the European Union (EU) average, which poses a concern in terms of the capacity of its people to compete in the international job market. Still, the country has never had as many graduates as currently, surpassing 101,200 in the same year, with women dominating. However, several concerns, mainly financial, remain a threat for higher education attainment among the Portuguese.
