Surprisingly, Chile ranked with the second-highest unemployment rate in Latin America with a staggering 8.7 percent unemployment, only behind Colombia. Nonetheless, the poor performance of the labor market in the South American country is more often linked to the slower recovery from the COVID-19 pandemic. It also depends on how strongly the pandemic impacted the Chilean economy in comparison with the rest of the region. In fact, the unemployment rate reached its highest point in the last decade during 2020, and in 2024 it is still considerably higher than before the pandemic.
