It was a Dutch woman who invented the first-ever paper coffee filter: housewife Melitta Bentz sought a smoother cup of coffee back in 1908 and ingeniously used pages from her son’s school notebook to brew it. With between six and eight kilograms consumed per capita in 2024, coffee is a very popular beverage in the Netherlands and Belgium and plays a crucial role in both countries’ economy. The Netherlands and Belgium are indeed among the top exporters of coffee in Europe.
