Presidential election in South Korea 2025 - statistics & facts
On June 3, 2025, South Korea elected the main liberal party’s Lee Jae-myung as its new president to serve the country for the next five years, beginning June 4, 2025. The snap election was held 60 days after the Constitutional Court upheld then-President Yoon Suk Yeol’s impeachment on April 4, 2025. This decision came in the wake of nationwide outrage and mass protests triggered by Yoon’s unprecedented declaration of martial law on December 3, 2024, and a vote by the National Assembly to impeach him just two weeks later. Former Gyeonggi Province Governor and human rights lawyer Lee won by a margin of 8.27 percentage points over the People Power Party’s candidate Kim Moon-soo, ending months of leadership vacuum since December 2024. Voter turnout amounted to 79.4 percent of the population. Around 35.24 million out of 44.36 million registered voters cast their ballots.
