When two nuclear powers attempt to outdo one another
For decades, India and Pakistan have been involved in numerous conflicts and military standoffs over Kashmir. This time, however, the risk of war breaking out is far greater and could destabilize the entire subcontinent. What triggered this latest escalation?
Five armed men from The Resistance Front 鈥 an offshoot of the terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba 鈥 killed 26 civilians in Pahalgam, a popular domestic tourist destination. According to eyewitnesses, the attackers specifically targeted Hindu and Christian men, highlighting the Islamist ideology of the militants 补苍诲鈥designating the attack as terrorism. Symbolically titled Operation Sindoor, India鈥檚 Ministry of Defence鈥痷sed the armed forces鈥痶o strike Pakistan and Pakistan-administered Kashmir, claiming to have been 鈥渇ocused, measured, and non-escalatory,鈥 in their attack targeting terrorist infrastructure, emphasizing this exercise as a counter-terror operation and not war against Pakistan.Consequently, India also suspended diplomatic ties with Pakistan, revoked trade agreements, and placed鈥land and coastal border forces鈥on high alert. Pakistan鈥檚 counter-response
The Pakistani government has denied any involvement or support of the terrorist attacks, and go as far as accusing the Indian government of a false flag attack, in order to retrack from Indus Water treaty. However, the neighboring country launched retaliatory drone and missile strikes, claiming to have downed several鈥Indian aircraft and drones. The Pakistani military emphasized readiness to counter any further Indian actions.
