Air transportation in Russia - statistics & facts
With its large customer base and a history of aircraft manufacturing, Russia is a major player in the aviation industry. The sector soared to new heights in 2024, with domestic carriers transporting over 111 million passengers and generating an impressive 1.8 trillion rubles in revenue. Air transportation dominates the Russian travel industry, with its passenger turnover surpassing other modes of transportation, such as railways. However, the sector remains under pressure of the Western sanctions, which include restrictions on exports of aircraft parts, Boeing and Airbus maintenance, as well as the closure of airspace for Russian aircraft. To reduce the import dependence, the Russian government has planned to increase the number of aircraft manufactured in the country; however, the shortage of equipment and components has been impeding the program.
