Transport industry in Romania - Statistics & Facts
The Romanian transport industry records one of the largest workforces and company volumes in the European Union (EU), making the Southeastern European country one of the cornerstones of the EU transport sector. As of 2024, around 607,000 people worked in the Romanian transport and storage industry, representing approximately 7.7 percent of the country's employed population. Romania was the sixth EU country, in 2021, with the most enterprises operating within this industry. Road freight transport remains central to Romania’s economy, with its strategic location making it a key regional hub. Since joining the Schengen Area in 2024, border wait times of up to 72 hours have been eliminated, saving transporters billions in lost time. At the same time, highway projects like the A7 Moldova Motorway, set to connect directly to the Ukrainian border by 2026, are advancing, strengthening Romania’s role in the EU logistics network.
