Smoking in Germany - Statistics & Facts
For a long time, Germany was the only EU country that allowed widespread advertising for tobacco products. Finally, in 2022, the German government introduced new restrictions that limit outdoor advertising, although it is still authorized in tobacco shops and in cinemas for films that are not aimed at under-18s. Nevertheless, Germany has one of the lowest prevalence of daily smokers across Europe, and the share of consumers continues to decrease. This could be related to the fact that 85 percent of Germans in 2023 declared to be health-conscious when it came to smoking. Moreover, among the younger generation, smoking is decreasing, but still used at times as a means to reduce stress.
