Smoking in France - Statistics & Facts
Although the common image of a French person is often associated with smoking, times are changing in France and tougher anti-tobacco measures are being introduced by the government, aiming to create a tobacco-free generation by 2032. Wholesale sales of cigarettes have already faced a steep decline in volume in the last 20 years, decreasing from over 80 billion units in 2002 to 31.8 in 2022. Nevertheless, as of 2022, the share of French people smoking was among the highest worldwide, and in the same year, nearly 428,000 people were treated for tobacco-related addictive disorders in France. Most of these patients were aged between 35 and 54 years.
