Since celebrities such as Kim Kardashian or Elon Musk have made publicly visible the effects of anti-diabetic medications such as Ozempic, Wegovy, Rybelsos, and Mounjaro on weight loss, the demand for these drugs has skyrocketed to the point of leading to global shortages. Spain is not an exception. In this Mediterranean nation, where obesity is considered the main health problem by one in four people, sales in pharmacies have more than doubled in just two years. In fact, nine of the twenty drugs with the highest revenue in 2024 were antidiabetics, three of which have already been approved for weight loss. This surge has fueled the enthusiasm of the pharmaceutical industry, whose impressive revenues from GLP-1 agonists sales could increase substantially in the coming months if funding by the Spanish Social Security were to be approved.
