Aging populations - statistics & facts
Globally, life expectancy at birth reached 73.2 years in 2023, compared with just over 46 years old in 1950. This extraordinary increase is attributed to different factors, such as improvements in health, higher living standards, and poverty reduction. However, the increase in life expectancy also raises challenges. Indeed, populations worldwide are aging, with the share of 65 and older reaching more than one-fifth of the population in Japan and in some European countries.
