Bioenergy industry in Germany - statistics & facts
Germany’s bioenergy sector remains a cornerstone of the country’s renewable energy transition, but recent trends show a potentially shifting role in the German energy landscape.
In 2024 Germany's bioenergy sector contributed nearly 46 terawatt hours (TWh) to the country's electricity generation. This figure, while substantial, represents a decline from the peak production levels observed in 2020, reflecting shifts in Germany’s energy policies and the growing dominance of wind and solar power. Monthly bioenergy output fluctuated between 3.24 and 3.79 TWh, with January seeing the highest production and September the lowest, highlighting the seasonal variations inherent in bioenergy generation. Despite these fluctuations, the installed bioenergy capacity reached 9,950 megawatts (MW) in 2023, showing a modest increase from the previous year but still below the 2020 peak of over 10,000 MW.
