Electricity and energy prices in Germany - statistics & facts
Between 2026 and 2029, Germany plans to cut energy costs for consumers and businesses by 42 billion euros. This comes off the back of the energy crisis, after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine disrupted fuel supplies, prices surged, putting significant pressure on households, businesses, and industry. Since then, the German government introduced a number of financial measures to support both private and business energy consumers in covering costs. Among these is a price cap for electricity prices, valid since January 2023. For households and small businesses, the cap is for 80 percent of their average consumption. For mid-size and large businesses, the cap refers to 70 percent of electricity consumed the year before.
