Geothermal energy worldwide - statistics & facts
Geothermal energy derives heat from the Earth’s subsurface to be used for heating and cooling purposes, electricity generation, and energy storage. The world used some 204 terawatt hours of direct geothermal heat in 2023, and generated roughly 97 terawatt hours of electricity from geothermal sources in 2022. Although geothermal energy remains a small player in the global renewable energy landscape, consumption has grown steadily in recent years. Furthermore, geothermal is a versatile and reliable source of renewable energy. In comparison with other renewable technologies such as wind and solar, geothermal plants are able to produce energy consistently, independent of weather conditions. Among renewables, geothermal presents the highest capacity factor, or ratio between actual production to theoretical maximum, reaching 82 percent in 2023.
