Hybrid electric cars in Japan - statistics & facts
Japan's total COâ‚‚ emissions exceeded one billion tons annually in the past years, roughly one-fifth of which was caused by the transportation sector. As one of the major COâ‚‚-emitting industries in Japan's economy, the performance of the transportation sector is crucial to Japan's endeavors to reach carbon neutrality by 2050. One of the key methods embraced by the automobile industry in Japan to tackle carbon gas emissions was the widespread introduction of hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs). In 2024, HEVs were the most-sold car engine types among several of Japan's automobile manufacturing giants on the domestic market, accounting for more than 80 percent in the case of Nissan. Over 60 percent of total new passenger vehicle registrations were HEVs, continuing the growing trend of the past years.
