Residential construction in Japan - statistics & facts
In 2024, new housing construction in Japan fell to the second-lowest level since 2009, below the threshold of 800,000 housing units newly built. New privately owned housing starts, often custom-built detached houses, declined for the fourth consecutive year. Demand for new homes is projected to enter a downward trend in the coming decades due to Japan’s rapidly aging and declining population. But there were other reasons behind the decline in new housing construction, such as inflation and rising interest rates.
